Adaptive Tech
My journey into the world of adaptive and accessible tech began in my undergraduate years when I met Jason, a father of 3, and his son Oliver. Oliver, who is on the autism spectrum, had struggled to learn to write. Together with Jason, I created an adaptive pen that provided Oliver with haptic feedback to help him write more easily.
After joining Microsoft, I identified an opportunity to bring some of the same inclusive approach to Microsoft's Surface product lineup. I assembled a cross-company team of like-minded individuals to incubate and refine the concept and organized co-design events to gather firsthand input from a community of potential users.
The project won first place in its category at Microsoft's worldwide corporate hackathon.
Today, Microsoft's customers can purchase the first product resulting from this initiative:
3D-printed adaptive pen grips, delivered in partnership with Shapeways.
